Getting Quartered in Omaha

One of the Omaha poker phrases that is mystifying to beginners is the phrase “getting quartered”. The term is used when multiple players split one half of the pot. It’s actually not that uncommon in these casino games for players to have a same valued hand in community based card games because so many players can build their hand off of the community cards. You need to be aware of this as a serious possibility for Omaha.

In Omaha, the pot would be split evenly among all the players who qualify. Sometimes times, you can actually lose money when you are quartered in Omaha by not breaking even. This happens in both live and online poker when the pot is particularly small, or when it is being split among a great number of players.

There are a lot of strategies out there to try to avoid losing money when you’re quartered. Some experts suggest folding all low valued hands because these have the highest possibility of leading you towards a quarter. I wouldn’t really suggest this though, because you could miss out on valuable opportunities. There is practically no way of knowing if the other players at the table have a matching value hand, so folding just means that you are cutting yourself out of the game for no reason.
